YOUR GUIDE: The perfect iris photo with a mobile phone
- To transform your eye into a digital artwork, you need a sharp and well-lit base image: Don't worry, with a modern smartphone it's very simple
- What you need
- Mobile phone with a good camera (iPhone 13+, Samsung S21+ or comparable)
- Additional person (helps with lighting or taking photos)
- 2nd smartphone (as a flashlight)
- Mirror (if you do it alone)
- STEP 1: Preparation
- Clean the camera lens: the most important thing Wipe the lens on the back of your phone with a soft cloth Fingerprints make the image look milky.
- No selfie camera: always use the main rear camera, it has much better quality.
- The right place: go to a room without direct sunlight (no window behind you, it reflects in the eye) A slightly darkened room is often better because we set the light ourselves.
- STEP 2: Lighting (pro tip)
- Do NOT use your camera flash.
- Take the 2nd smartphone and switch on the flashlight.
- Position: the additional person should shine the flashlight from the side onto your eye (from left or right, approx. 15-20cm).
- Why from the side? It brings out the 3D structure and fibres of your iris (like a landscape at sunset) and prevents disturbing reflections directly in front of the pupil.
- STEP 3: Taking the photo
- Macro mode: if your smartphone has a macro mode (often shown as a small flower), switch it on If not, move as close as possible (approx. 8-10 cm) and zoom slightly (2x) until the eye fills the screen.
- Open the eye wide: open your eye widely Gently pull your eyelids apart with thumb and index finger if needed so the iris is fully visible.
- Focus: tap exactly on the iris on the screen to set focus and adjust exposure.
- Hold still and shoot: exhale calmly, hold the phone stable (use both hands or rest your elbows) and take several photos in a row.
- STEP 4: Quality check
Before sending the images, zoom into your photos:- Are the fine lines and structures in the iris clearly visible?
- Is the image pixelated or blurry? (if yes, please repeat)
- Are there reflections that cover the colour? (change the lighting angle)
- ADDITIONAL: For hand photos (palm)
If you choose the « Iris in the hand » design:- Place your hand flat on a dark table or black fabric.
- Light the palm from the side so the lifelines cast visible shadows.
- Photograph the hand vertically from above.
