- A true jewel of haute parfumerie, an absolute is the most precious essence of a plant's raw material. Like an elixir, an absolute is obtained by the extractive action of an organic solvent on a plant. Extraction begins with maceration of the plant to obtain what is known as a concrete. This solid concrete is then melted in alcohol to remove insoluble waxes, while retaining all pigments and essences. A final operation separates the alcohol from the perfumed substance: the result is the absolute, a dense, precious, highly concentrated liquid.
