In the Calon Ségur family, the third wine boasts a fresh, fruity character designed for immediate enjoyment. It is primarily made from young vines, with a blend that harmoniously combines Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Formerly known as La Chapelle de Calon, then Le Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur, it has been rebranded as Le C de Calon Ségur since the 2019 vintage. C As in the third letter of the alphabet, for the estate's third wine. C As in Coeur (Heart), symbolizing the Marquis de Ségur's love for this estate and the distinctive mark on our bottles.

Features

The Estate

Calon was the name given to the boat used in the Middle Ages to transport timber from one bank of the Garonne to the other. And in the early 18th century, the Marquis de Ségur, who received the estate as a wedding gift, added his name to it, thus giving birth to the label of this Saint-Estèphe Third Growth.

Château Calon-Ségur remained in the Capbern-Gasqueton family throughout the 19th century, until 2012, when the estate was purchased by Suravenir Assurances, which continues to produce Saint-Estèphe wines with an inimitable style.

Château Calon-Ségur has also become famous for the label adorning the estate's bottles. Since the 18th century, the heart has indeed been the symbol of the estate, paying homage to this quote from the Marquis de Ségur: “I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon.” For nearly three centuries, lovers of Château Calon-Ségur have remained loyal to this iconic estate of the appellation.

The Vineyard

The Château Calon Ségur vineyard covers an area of 50 hectares, 48 of which are under production. The vines, averaging 20 years of age, are planted on a thick layer of Garonne gravel dating from the Quaternary period, topped by a thin layer of lacustrine clay.

The Wine

Formerly known as “La Chapelle de Calon” and then “Saint-Estèphe de Calon Ségur,” C de Calon Ségur is Château Calon Ségur's third wine. This cuvée is made exclusively from young Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

Vinification and Aging

Harvested by hand, the grapes undergo an initial sorting on the vine followed by a second sorting in the cellar. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel truncated cone-shaped tanks. Vatting lasts 18 to 21 days. Micro-bubbling. Co-inoculation with exogenous yeasts and bacteria in stainless steel tanks at 25°C. Aging lasts approximately 14 months in three-year-old barrels.

Soil

Thick layer of gravel deposited by the river during the Quaternary period. Underlying subsoil is predominantly clay of Tertiary age. At the top of the gravel deposits, there is also a thin layer of clay of lacustrine origin. 55 hectares.

Harvest

Hand-harvested. Initial inspection of the grapes on the vine. Vibrating destemmer and manual sorting table.

Vinification

Temperature-controlled stainless steel truncated cone vats. Vatting for 18 to 21 days.

Aging

17 months in three-year-old barrels. Fining with egg whites.
