Description
- White-tailed deer spend their mornings and evenings grazing. They are herbivores, eating green plants and nuts. Deer live in small groups, usually consisting of a female and her young. Males have magnificent antlers on their heads and live in small groups of three or four. Both males and females have reddish-brown coats in summer and grayish-brown coats in winter. In the absence of predators, deer can sometimes be so numerous that food is in short supply. Deer are ruminants like cattle. This means they have four stomachs and ruminate semi-digested food. This complicated process enables deer to eat foods such as twigs, which most animals cannot digest.
