Cos Estournel

A smooth and aromatic Saint-Estèphe second wine

The estate

Situated in the north of the Médoc, on the hillside of Saint-Estèphe, Château Cos d'Estournel stands majestically. Resembling a veritable Maharajah's palace, the château and its pagodas surprise and captivate the eye. In 1791, Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel inherited hectares of vineyards and had the estate built. An adventurer who had travelled the world, his taste for the exotic and the Orient gave Château Cos d'Estournel its architecture, which is so unique in the Médoc. Owned by Michel Reybier since 2000, Château Cos d'Estournel continues to shine within the Saint-Estèphe appellation and has joined the ranks of the world's greatest wines, distinguishing itself through its unique style, where a passion for beauty and excellence is a constant pursuit.

The vineyard

Boasting an exceptional geographical location, the Cos d'Estournel vineyard lies on the edge of a plateau, in the immediate vicinity of the Gironde estuary. This Saint-Estèphe vineyard thus benefits from a maritime climate whilst being sheltered from inclement weather. The vines are planted on two hillsides and a central plateau, benefiting from ideal exposure and good ventilation.

The wine

This 2020 vintage marks Michel Reybier's twentieth year at the helm of Château Cos d'Estournel. Produced since 1994, Pagodes de Cos Rouge, the second wine of Château Cos d'Estournel, is made from vines with an average age of 40 years.

The vintage

2020 was a year characterised by early growth in the vines. From October 2019 to February 2020, heavy rainfall ensured sufficient water reserves. The mild spring weather encouraged early but uneven budbreak due to the high rainfall. This unevenness was mitigated by preparatory work on the soil to allow it to warm up more quickly. Whilst the mild weather in April, combined with heavy rainfall, raised concerns about a deterioration in the vines' health, the favourable conditions in mid-May allowed for rapid and uniform flowering. June and July were extremely dry (5 mm of rainfall over 55 days), causing significant water stress. Due to this dry weather accompanied by cool temperatures, careful leaf removal was carried out on the side facing the rising sun to promote phenolic synthesis in the grapes. Rainy spells in early August reignited the grapes' ripening process. The vineyard's favourable location and the teams' hard work minimised the health risks associated with high humidity combined with intense heat. The Indian summer, lasting from late August until the harvest, promoted optimal ripening of the grapes. Given the early ripening of the vintage and the high temperatures in September, the harvest began early to preserve the grapes' tension and density.
