- Sicily, with the largest wine-growing region in Italy, lies off the tip of the Italian boot; climate - intense summer heat and little rainfall, with an African influence in the south - and geography - mountainous terrain with poor soils - predestine the island for viticulture. It knows how to use the advantages of nature: Slopes with excellent orientation, plenty of sunlight, favorable altitudes with considerable temperature differences between day and night, as well as a whole range of characterful indigenous grape varieties. The soils vary depending on the sub-region of the island: in the west, very poor soils of volcanic origin dominate. It is therefore no wonder that the most sought-after locations for intense, dark and fruity wines are on the slopes of Mount Etna. In other regions, sandy soils with a high iron content can be found. In combination with an underlying layer of limestone, they lend the wines fresh mineral notes.
