- Region: Puglia, in southern Italy, is one of the country's most productive wine-growing regions. Puglia stretches for 400 kilometres, from the spur near Foggia to the tip of the heel behind Lecce. The region cultivates most of the grape varieties found in southern Italy, 80 per cent of which are reds. The Mediterranean climate and the limestone subsoils rich in iron oxide create perfect conditions for viticulture. The very hot summers provide ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen, producing very dark, earthy and full-bodied wines. Unlike other southern regions, there are hardly any mountains here; the landscape consists mainly of high plateaus and plains. A wine-growing region with enormous potential – the possibilities of the indigenous grape varieties are far from having been exhausted. Puglia already produces wines of very high quality, with great intensity and body, the finest of which come from the Salento peninsula.
