The estate
Founded in 1902, Clos du Marquis is a wine that traces its origins to the Petit Clos, the former residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Adjacent to Château Léoville Las Cases, the Clos du Marquis vineyard is situated on the exceptional terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. The Vineyard
Located on the most prestigious terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation, Clos du Marquis is an exceptional vineyard situated 500 meters from the entrance to the Léoville Las Cases vineyard. With an average vine age of 35 years, the Clos du Marquis vineyard spans approximately 43 hectares of vines. The terroir is homogeneous, consisting of a significant amount of organic matter on the surface and soils composed of Quaternary sandy-clay gravel. These gravel deposits are distinct in that they are older and finer-grained than those of the Léoville Las Cases vineyard, resulting in greater water stress. Being farther from the Gironde River, the Clos du Marquis terroir consequently ripens later, with an extended grape ripening period.
The Vintage
A rainy, mild winter and a warm, humid spring led to an early start to the growing season. Although conditions subsequently favored vine development, yields were lower than the previous year. Low summer rainfall combined with significant daily temperature ranges created ideal conditions for refining the grapes' ripeness.
Blend
Clos du Marquis 2020 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (61%), Merlot (33%), and Cabernet Franc (6%).
