The Estate
In 1853, Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired Château Brane-Mouton at auction. The estate, located in the heart of the Médoc in Pauillac, was then renamed Château Mouton Rothschild. In 1922, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over the reins of the estate. A visionary, he decided in 1924 to begin bottling all the wine at the château while commissioning an artist to design the wine's label. Every year since 1945, the Château Mouton Rothschild label has featured an original work by a great contemporary artist. Dalí, César, Miró, Chagall, Warhol, Soulages, Bacon, Balthus, Tàpies, Koons, Doig… a fascinating collection that grows each year with a new work and forms the famous exhibition “Art and the Label.” An emblem of the Pauillac appellation, this Premier Cru Classé showcases the great wines of Bordeaux throughout the world. Today, the three children of Baroness Philippine de Rothschild—Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild, and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild—steer the destiny of Château Mouton Rothschild.
The Vineyard
Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild is a Pauillac wine produced from a vineyard located northwest of Bordeaux, in the Médoc. The vines are planted on stony gravel soils that absorb heat during the day and release it at night, thereby promoting the ripening of the grapes. These well-drained soils rest on a clay-gravel subsoil, giving the estate's wines their distinctive power, elegance, and tannic structure.

The Vintage
A very mild winter and early spring led to early budbreak in the vines. A snow front passing through in late March had no impact on the vineyards. Characterized by temperatures above seasonal norms, spring was punctuated by heavy rainfall, particularly in early May. Starting in mid-May, hot and dry high-pressure conditions significantly accelerated the growing cycle, with flowering occurring 12 days earlier than usual. While June was mixed, July was marked by heat waves and severe drought. The few rainy spells in August stimulated veraison and uniform berry development. Historically early, the 2020 harvest allowed for the picking of fully ripe grapes in perfect health. Despite lower yields than in recent vintages, the quality is exceptional, producing fresh, balanced, and dense wines that reveal powerful tannins and beautiful finesse.
